Design and Build Quality

The X1 Carbon's design is a milestone in the 3D printing world. Its fully enclosed chassis is not just an aesthetic choice but a functional one. It minimizes warping issues by controlling the ambient temperature for heat-sensitive materials like ABS and ASA.

Chassis and Frame

The metal frame, weighing approximately 14 kg, is sturdy and vibration-resistant. The CoreXY kinematics system, combined with lightweight print heads, enables high speed and acceleration values. The glass panels on the doors allow you to monitor the printing process from the outside.

Print Bed

The double-sided PEI-coated steel sheet snaps magnetically into place. One side has a textured surface, and the other is smooth. The textured side offers excellent adhesion for PLA and PETG, while the smooth side is more suitable for flexible materials like TPU.

Air Filtration

The built-in activated carbon filter significantly filters VOC gases released during ABS and ASA printing. Even when operating in an enclosed room, the odor is barely noticeable – this is particularly important for those printing in a home environment.

Lighting

The internal LED lighting system evenly illuminates the object during printing, improving the quality of the camera feed. Clear images can be obtained even during overnight prints.

Setup and First Print

The X1 Carbon's setup is revolutionary in the industry. The time from unboxing to the first print is approximately 15 minutes.

Setup Steps

  1. Unbox the printer and remove protective foam (2 min)
  2. Connect the PTFE tube and install the AMS (3 min)
  3. Plug in the power cable and turn on the printer (1 min)
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi via the touchscreen (2 min)
  5. Install Bambu Studio on your computer (3 min)
  6. Start automatic calibration and send the first print (5 min)

That's it. Seriously, that's it. Processes like bed leveling, PID tuning, and e-step calibration, which take hours on traditional 3D printers, are fully automated on the X1 Carbon thanks to its Lidar system.

First Print Experience

We performed our first print with standard Bambu PLA as a Benchy model. It completed in 17 minutes and 32 seconds, and the result was flawless. Bridge tests, overhangs, and fine details were professional-grade even on the first print.

Print Quality Tests

During our 3-month testing period, we tested the X1 Carbon with various materials and difficulty levels.

PLA Tests (Bambu PLA Basic)

  • Temperature: 220°C nozzle / 60°C bed
  • Speed: 300 mm/s
  • Result: Excellent surface quality. Layer lines are almost invisible at 0.2mm. It managed to print bridges up to 60mm without sagging. Overhang tests produced clean results up to 70 degrees without supports.

PETG Tests (Bambu PETG HF)

  • Temperature: 245°C nozzle / 80°C bed
  • Speed: 250 mm/s
  • Result: PETG's known stringing issues are minimized on the X1 Carbon. Retraction settings are optimized from the factory. The balance of strength and flexibility in mechanical parts is very good.

ABS/ASA Tests

  • Temperature: 260°C nozzle / 100°C bed (enclosed)
  • Speed: 200 mm/s
  • Result: The enclosed design has revolutionized ABS printing. Warping is negligible even on parts up to 20cm in height. Exterior parts were successfully printed with ASA. The activated carbon filter largely resolves the odor issue.

TPU Tests (95A Shore)

  • Temperature: 230°C nozzle / 60°C bed
  • Speed: 80 mm/s (for TPU)
  • Result: The direct drive extruder fed TPU smoothly. Clogging and feeding issues encountered with Bowden systems are absent here. Flexible phone cases and vibration dampers were printed successfully.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Materials (PA-CF)

  • Temperature: 280°C nozzle / 100°C bed
  • Speed: 150 mm/s
  • Result: PA-CF printing with the hardened steel nozzle is particularly impressive. Industrial-grade hardness and durability. We used it for drone parts and mechanical fasteners — the result
    the tips are perfect.

Speed and Performance

The most talked-about feature of the X1 Carbon is its speed. A maximum printing speed of 500 mm/s and an acceleration of 20,000 mm/s² are impressive on paper, but how does it perform in practice?

Speed Tests

Test Model Standard Speed (50mm/s) X1 Carbon (300mm/s) Time Difference
Benchy ~55 min ~17 min 69% faster
Calibration Cube ~25 min ~8 min 68% faster
Phone Case ~90 min ~28 min 69% faster
Vase Mode (20cm) ~120 min ~35 min 71% faster

Input Shaping

At high speeds, the biggest enemy is vibration, and vibration means ghosting/ringing artifacts. The X1 Carbon's accelerometer-based input shaping system actively compensates for vibration. Even at 300 mm/s, ghosting is almost imperceptible.

Noise Level

Despite the high speed, the quietness inside the chassis is impressive. Our measurements show:

  • Idle: ~25 dB
  • Normal print (100mm/s): ~45 dB
  • High speed (300mm/s): ~52 dB
  • Maximum speed (500mm/s): ~58 dB

It can be comfortably used for night printing up to 300 mm/s.

Software and Ecosystem
