Open Frame Design

The A1 Mini has an open frame (no enclosure) design. Its advantages are:

  • You can directly observe the printing process
  • Good air circulation, ideal for PLA
  • Easy maintenance and intervention
  • Compact size is maintained

Print Bed Quality

The textured PEI magnetic bed is among the best in this price segment. Truly 15-Minute Setup

For daily use, a speed of 200 mm/s and a layer height of 0.20mm offer the best balance. Thanks to input shaping, print quality remains very high even at this speed.

PETG Print Tests

Temperature: 230-240°C nozzle, 70°C bed

Results with PETG are quite satisfactory. Adhesion on the PEI sheet is smooth, but sometimes excessive adhesion can be an issue. Increasing the Z-offset slightly and reducing the first layer speed resolves this problem. Stringing is more pronounced than with PLA, but after optimizing retraction settings, it reduces to an acceptable level.

Quality significantly drops at speeds above 200 mm/s with PETG. Around 150 mm/s is the ideal speed for this material.

TPU (Flexible Filament) Tests

Temperature: 220-230°C nozzle, 50°C bed

Thanks to its direct drive extruder, the A1 Mini can print flexible filaments quite well. I tested with 95A hardness TPU:

  • Excellent results at 50 mm/s
  • Still good quality at 80 mm/s
  • Feeding issues start above 100 mm/s

Flexible parts like phone cases, gaskets, and bumpers can be printed successfully. This is a huge advantage over printers with Bowden extruders.

Silk PLA Tests

ABS Attempt

This is where things get tricky. Since the A1 Mini does not have an enclosed chassis, ABS printing presents significant challenges:

  • Warping: Almost inevitable. Tolerable for small parts, disastrous for large parts
  • Layer separation: Frequently occurs due to airflow
  • Odor: ABS fumes spread in an unenclosed environment, which is not suitable for health

Solution: A DIY enclosure can be made (even a cardboard box works), but this printer is not designed for ABS. If you need to print ABS, opt for an enclosed model like the P1S or X1C.

Carbon Fiber Filament

Carbon fiber reinforced filaments (PLA-CF, PETG-CF) are not recommended on a standard brass nozzle. The abrasive carbon fibers rapidly wear down the nozzle. If you plan to use such materials, you need to purchase a hardened steel nozzle. Since the A1 Mini's nozzle system is replaceable, this is possible but incurs additional costs.

After 6 Months of Use
